Purpose of Music Video's

In this report, I am going to be talking about the purpose of music videos. As a part of this, I will be mentioning 'where do people watch/consume music videos and if it has changed in the past years'. Furthermore, I will be talking about 'how music videos have increased the income for the record company' In this section of my report I will be mentioning an artist who has their own record label and therefore benefits directly. To finish off my report I will be analysing how music videos are used to promote a particular song, the artist's album, a new artist or promotion of an artist's change in musical direction or image and a synergy with another media sector.
For my summary of my report, I will be talking about different artists and record labels, such as major labels, independent record companies and artists who release their products with no industry support.

1. Where do people watch/consume music videos today? How has this changed over the past years?

In the last quarter of 2016, 25% of people used Youtube worldwide to watch music videos. Since then to the last quarter of 2017, the numbers have dropped to 21% meaning that within one year Youtube has lost 4% of viewers. This shows that Youtube is getting fewer viewers on their page for the specific viewing of music videos. The reason for this is because users are able to use different media platforms on their mobile devices through applications that download songs though Youtube and allow users to stream and download these videos for them to be able to listen to and watch their favourite artist for no added price. This is why it is so popular because users don't have to pay to view songs of their preference.

'61% of teens say that they are watching more online video than they were last year, and 73% say music videos are the best type of content for showing an artist's creative vision.' This was a quote which displays a statement stating primary research on users watching music videos and it shows that people still like the idea of watching a video rather than just the music.

Music Videos have changed majorly due to our advanced knowledge in computer technology. This allows us to release music videos on the internet, through a TV programme, through a mobile application etc.

2. How music videos have increased the income for the record company. ( find an example of an artist who owns the record label and therefore benefits directly. )

Music videos have proven to help out record labels. Main reasons for record label gaining fame from an artist is because of fans that like the music that artist is producing with that record label which makes the audience want to find out more about who that record label works within case they might like another artist that they work with. By this occurring, it is an endless line of promotion for the record label and artists signed to that label.

An amazing example for an artist who owns their own record label would be J.Cole (Jermaine Lamarr Cole). J.Cole was originally signed to RocNation Records which was founded by rapper Jay-Z. But then in 2007, Jermaine L Cole founded 'DreamVille records' along with his manager Ibrahim Hamad. This was a great success for J.Cole as he already known from the music he made under Jay-Z. Once he started 'DreamVille' his fans instantly started to listen to him. But they realised that every song he does is his and only his. This encourages them to keep up to date with J.Cole along with the artists that he has under his belt.

3. How are Music Video's used to promote the following

3a. A particular song  ( explain how a music video helps to promote a song )

Music videos are able to promote particular songs. One of the main ways of doing this is to have the artist within the video so that fans of that artist get instantly attracted. Furthermore, dance routines have a large effect on how the audience interact with the song. Dance routines can promote the song instantly through word of mouth and social media.

3b. The artist’s album ( explain how a music video can be used to promote an album.)

Within the music video, they could add in snips of the front cover of the album or even the name of the album printed in the scene of the video to allow the audience to view it to be able to improve attraction and help word of mouth advertisement.

3c. A new artist or promotion of an artist’s change in musical direction or image

New artists are able to promote themselves through media by adding valuable and deer personal goods to show their fans that they have money. This impacts on audiences as the artist becomes a role model to their fans.

3d. A synergy with another media sector (film, television programme  etc.)

Music videos are able to promote other media sectors. For example, 'Welcome to the party' by Diplo, French Montana and Lil Pump was used for the film Deadpool 2.
